African Fashion Brought To Life

The FashionMist exhibition held at the lavish Hotel Russell in London turned out to be a success. Designers came from Ghana and the US to be part of this wonderful event showcasing African talent through fashion, music and poetry . Designers had their clothes, jewellery and accessories for members of the public to try and buy. Garments were on sale so that we could all look good for less. Handbags, shoes, make up you name it, if it was worth having it was there. Vibrant colours were in every corner of the room bringing FashionMist 2011 to life.

One word to describe Anita Quansah's jewellrey..breathtaking, the neckpieces were practically glistening on the models as they caught the light on the runway. The use of intricate textiles and bold designs really make her pieces a work of art. Her ideas are definitely fashion forward as she takes it to another level with chains draped from a dress.

The N'kya team adore Diva Delicious for having conspicuous bags with different styles. Designer Sandi Owusu had us in mind when she created cute bags with a Ghanaian origin and blended it together with the block colour trend of the western world. Her oversized bag with a large african print bow adds a touch of elegance and is one of those must have accessories this summer.

Aya Morrisons swimwear collection represents the confident and sexy female. The New York based designer has incorporated african prints into her line to produce styles for all kinds of women. The cut-out designs of her bikinis are amazing but the swimsuit with the kente design? That we love. Ladies, this is what you need in your wardrobe.

We are proud of our new collection for N'kya Designs as it shows that you can look hot with clothes that are bright and beautiful. We love our new bedazzled collection as it is daring and fierce plus the gems on the dresses will highlight the areas you love. The bralet with matching coral trousers are perfect for this summer and we are sure that you'll agree that our boobtube dress with gold ruffles is stunning.

Designer Antoinette Ayikai Amuzu's turquoise tulip dresses with green and red feathers on the shoulders were show stopping. Feathers are back in fashion and the proof is in the earrings but Ayikai Couture proves that it looks just as good on clothes too. We love the fact that her garments are designed for both slim and full figured women. The new collection also included skirts with matching clutches and Antoinette fused cultures together by adding waist belts which accentuate those curves.

The bags by Yaa Ataa brings a funky edge and modern approach to African fashion. Her bags stood out on the runway because of they are like no other. Designer Josephine Wiafeh's bags are designed for the modern woman and each bag is unique. Its not only clutch bags, it over sized shopper style bags as well, these bags are in this season and can be seen in Longchamps Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

Mina Evans is reaching out to both males and females with her collections. The female collection included a cute black dress with embellishment and a gorgeous maxi dress in canary yellow. Her collection also features smart shirts for men that have a strip of african print running down the front. A white dress shirt with blue ruffles and a black waist belt looked different but daring.

Presenter Benny Bonsu wowed us all with her dresses on stage which included a beautiful purple dress with gorgeous gems by designer Mina Evans. No, it wasn't only the models rocking hot outfits, she rocked them as well and looked amazing. Talent was brought to us through music and poetry. Songs performed by sisters Hazel Mak & Miss Mak opened the fashion show and really brought the fashion show to life. The atmosphere at hotel Russell was a lively one thanks the bubbly presenters. This event was a spectacular one but it wouldn't have happened without the determination of Shelia Boateng who put the show together to bring African fashion to light and give designers the recognition they deserve. The fashion show raised money for the charity Global Mamas which provides women with the support they need in order to be the independent women.

FashionMist2011 is not just for the ladies - its for the guys as well...Kayobi clothing will be making a statement.

The capsule collection which features bodycon dresses were worn by the models at Top Model of Colour proving that N'kya Designs is one to look out for. Diva Delicious specialise in accesories produced from native materials in Ghana. Their line is full of vibrant bags and conspicuous designs. Anita Quansah who is known for her statement neckpeices which are made from recycled textiles will be showcasing her latest collection so be prepared to wowed. Anita has had years of experience selling her handmade couture fabrics to renowned designers and the use of vintage peice bring the past and the present together to create a work of art. Antoinette established Ayikai Couture the african fashion label in 2009 and since then has used the adinkra symbols of ghana to cretae one of a kind designs for women of all body shapes and sizes. The Afropolitan collection features big shoulders and sexy pleats.

The exhibition will feature a pop up space for designers to sell peices of thier collections, there will also be stalls for clothes, jewellery and beauty products. Singers and comedians will be attending to make sure its an event to remember. African fashion will definetely come to light with a night of culture and fashion.

Get ready guys to meet designers from around the world as they are coming together at the Grand Connaught Rooms in Holborn on 26th March 2011 to take part in a fabulous fashion event. Yes, Fashion exhibitions is for the African fashion Industry aswell after all we've got to and that final touch. Its catwalk time again and were doing it in style with FashionMist. The runway will have the hottest garments and feature the most exclusive collections from many designers.

This exhibition/ fashion show has been put together to raise money for the Global Mamas chaity (globalmamas.org). This oranisation helps women in Africa to be economically independant. All proceeds from the fashion show go directly to the women and the non-profit programs that help them with business development.

Models strutting their stuff down the runway to afrobeats? It doesn't get any better. The fashionistas who attended Retail Soiree 2 got to see the latest pieces from N'kya Designs which included the 'City Girl' and 'Capsule' collection. People had the chance to buy exclusive items in an upbeat environment. The 'City Girl' dress is just what every style conscious woman needs in her wardrobe. Going to the office does not mean you've got to dress in clothes that are plain and simply; why not switch it up with a fitted dress and waste belt that stops at the knee, who said smart wear has to boring? This corporate collection has you in mind as we've used this seasons darker colours. Our one shoulder gold dress and our red bombshell dress which resembles the famous dress worn by Marilyn Monroe works wonders and the fashion show proved it. Wondering how to make that little black dress stand out in crowd? Easy, team it up with gold and black neck-piece by Bianou then there's no way you can missed. One of our models rocked the black dress with a pair of zebra print wedges...a sense of Africa a touch of you.The girls were seriously working it putting contrasting colours together to bring out the most amazing designs. 'The Devils wear Prada, angels wear N'kya Designs' is our new slogan that we just love. They are on the back out fitted t-shirts with a range of colours.

Dresses that had black and brown were worn with bright red earrings by Bianou. Our models showed that dark colours and bright coloured accessories does make you fashion forward. Why not stand out from the crowd with shows stopper earrings? Bianou is definitely bringing hoops back but with a sexy African twist. There is seriously a colour for everyone whether is orange, hot pink or electric blue you will definitely have something to go with outfit! The collection of bags are just bursting with colour but you've got to bold enough, we challenge you. You'll be glad to know that feather earrings are back in fashion as their in the shops only these are more likely to grab your attention because they've been put together with beautiful beads. Statement bags are the final touch to an outfit then you're ready to go. Bibish the Congolese designer of Bianou told us about her bold bags and guess what...she found inspiration from a pear for one her bags, now that's creative.

Kayobi clothing was also the runway with the 'Make fufu not war' t-shirts and we've found a hot way to rock it and that's with black leggings and cute wedges. The 'Mama Africa' t-shirt would look so hot tucked into to a pair of shorts...go on..add a blazer to complete the look.His collection was also showcased at Ghana Party in the Park. The designer Kwabena Boateng is looking forward to launching his new collection this year. The lively atmosphere at the Cape Bar meant that the N'kya Team had fun, more people attended and we were glad to see that boys wanted to be a part of the event. Seeing younger people was great as well. Samira, one of our guests said her favourite had to be the capsule collection because she loved the bodycon style of the dresses. Nkya Designs proved to be everything sassy, sexy and stylish.

Boxing Kitten, release a new collection of African Vintage clothing. The Resort 2010 collection is conspicuous with colours such as hot pink, turquoise and yellow. This range stands out because of the use of bright colours that are not usually used in African print. The mini dresses are perfect for the summer whilst the play-suits will work wonders in the winter. Boxing Kitten designer Maya Lake has also launched a footwear range introducing patterned brogues. Solange works this outfit with a pair of YSL Tribute Platform Sandals.

Nkya Designs provided a warm and cosy environment for fellow fashionistas at Retail Soiree. People got the chance to pick out some stylish clothes and accessories with an African twist for prices that no one would want to miss out on. The atmosphere was great, you wouldn't even think it was snowing outside. Relaxing, chatting with friends and trying and buying clothes made the evening lots of fun. Many dresses were popular from our cute cocktail dresses to our amazing maxi dresses, there was definitely something for everyone.

Oneoffpinkribbon presented a hand made bow collection which is made from kente fabrics as well as a selection of satin and cotton fabrics. The cute collection features earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings. They are just what you need to complete any outfit. Looking to make a statement? Then you need one of our bags. Whether it's an adorable clutch or an over-the-shoulder bag, accessories with a hint of tradition always do the trick.

Kayobi were there with their 'Make Fufu Not War' t-shirt and hoodies for both males and females. Fashion mixed with issues faced in society today. Love it. That one sentence says it all, do something positive with your life. GPUK jewellery also made an appearance with their latest collection which features glass pearls. Their modern jewellery incorporates a hint of an african culture give it a wide appeal.

We also got the chance to interview some of our customers and here's what they said. Chenoa from Jamaica heard about Nkya designs from a friend. She felt that the colours used were a lot brighter than other ethnic brands and she liked the cut of particular styles. Her friend also mentioned that the designs were spot on and sophisticated. She also said that our hooded dress was really daring. Many people agreed that seeing the clothes made them want to try them on. Fungai who attended with her friends mentioned that the clothes were modern but would have preferred some of the clothes if they were plain. Yasmin who heard about N'kya designs from our website was in love with our handbags, she was happy that the prices were affordable and felt Nkya Designs really took students into consideration. She suggested that we should make false eyelashes. Imagine that! That wasn't all she also mentioned underwear, kente lingerie now that would be hot. An evening of indulgence and fun was definitely the place to be.

Nkya Designs goes to Top Model of Colour 2010!

An amazing opportunity of receiving a modelling contract was given to young people of colour by Mahogany Management. Mahogany Management believes that people of colour should get their chance to shine on the front cover of magazines. Top Model of Colour gave both males and females the chance to show the country their talents. Some contestants came with a past that they had left behind to fulfil dreams close to their hearts. Paula, the 2009 winner thanked Sola for giving her the opportunity to go to Gambia. The competition gave the winners the chance to win £1000 and many other fabulous prizes. During this competition, the males were given compliments by a panel of judges and constructive criticism in order to break in to the harsh world of modelling. The girls however had a tough time, "Would you put on weight?" What kind of question is that?, causing a contestant to fight back ''I do eat''. The audience booed the judges including Mr Gorgeous as they made comments about not having the right 'look'. Isn't that the stylist's job? Faces dropped as their hearts sunk making it quite hard to watch at times.

The african prints worn by the models brought back the meaning of the competition as being about colour and fashion. At the Nkya hq, we have launched a collection of bodycon dresses with a hint of tradition. A backless dress with green, purple and brown leaves around the neck and a sleeveless bodycon dress with black and white print draped from the shoulder really gives an edge to our latest pieces. Our dresses looked fabulous on the runway and they would definitely be successful in mainstream fashion because of the material we've used .The fitted dresses give a touch of sexiness and comfort at the same time, what more could you ask for? The african print wear of the night definitely made the show fun to watch and gave the audience a chance to see the revolution that has occurred within the african fashion industry.

The competition reminded the contestants what modelling is all about as they had to answer two question each about the fashion industry. Jason Best was asked about the first black model to receive supermodel status to which he replied 'Tyson Beckford'. Not all the questions however were about the black fashion industry. Wilson, another contestant was asked what 'GQ' stood for but the audience shouted out Gentlemen Quarterly after seeing him struggle. Asking fashion related questions showed that the contestants did not have knowledge on the black fashion industry as Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell were thought to be the answer to most questions. As a model, knowing what makes you stand out is important, an answer such as ''my hair colour'' tells people that you don't know how to sell yourself. Comedian Ms Glenda Jaxson, eased the tension in the room making sure everyone had a good time.

A wide range of styles were worn on the night including a black leather waterfall jacket with print on the front was modelled by one of the contestants. Nana Afua the winner rocked a yellow cocktail dress with ruffles and Jason Best wore a tailored jacket with an African print tie (how cool) looking simple but smart. The models portrayed a sense of fierceness while strutting their stuff on the runway which proved the competition was an intense one. The competition did resemble a beauty pageant at times but with our unexpected but exiting designs, our team definitely made it a night to remember.
